How to Thrive in a Long Distance Relationship

How to Thrive in a Long Distance Relationship

Not long ago, having a long distance relationship was nearly impossible, as communication took far too long to establish, and there was no effective way of truly sharing your time together as a couple with so much distance between the two of you. With the progression of the internet and the resources it provides, having a long distance relationship is more feasible than ever, and there are a number of ways you can use these tools to keep your relationship alive and thriving.

Video Chat: The Key to a Happy Long Distance Relationship

While speaking face to face in a distance relationship may only happen several times a year, the use of video chat can virtually reduce the distance between the two of you due to its unique and innovative nature. For those who are unaware, video chat involves two or more people using cameras and microphones to have a virtual face-to-face conversation, and can be done using a number of free platforms such as Skype or FaceTime. These platforms have nearly limitless advantages over speaking on the phone, as it allows the two of you to see each other as you speak, giving you the feeling that you are in the same room as your partner. While being together in the same location is ideal, video chat is a must for those who may not see each other but a few times each year.

Always Have Plans to Look Forward To

Time apart can feel like forever when you don’t know when you’ll see your partner next, however there is one simple way to combat this feeling of frustration: after every time you see your partner, make plans to see each other again. Whether they be just weeks ahead or months down the road, having plans to look forward to will make the time fly by much faster than it would if you had doubts about the time of your next meeting.

Make the Distance Temporary

Technically, it is feasible to have a permanent long distance relationship, however the chances are that you or your partner will grow old of the situation if there is no end in sight. It’s important that the two of you have some future plans to be together in the same location, or the relationship will seem to drag, and you and your partner will be far more likely to call it off at some point along the way. Avoid this by having a discussion about your future together: discuss your dreams, your desires, and your goals. Make sacrifices if needed to be together, because in the end, you and your partner will be far happier as a result.

Avoid Forced Communication

Some long distance couples have set times each day that they will call or video chat each other, and while this may sound like a great way to encourage communication in the relationship, the communication being had is not natural, and over time may feel forced. Imagine your partner having a night with their friends, and they have to leave the party early in order to go home and give you a call at a certain time. The first time, it may not be an issue, but as the situation progresses, this a certain way to instill bitterness in your partner. Instead, let the communication come naturally, and do not fault your partner if they don’t call you every day. Instead, appreciate the thought of when they do call you, and understand that they are doing so because they want to speak to you, not because they feel forced into doing so.

Long distance relationships may seem like a nightmare, but there are some simple and easy ways to make it work. It’s as simple as making time for each other, and allowing for natural communication. By working with your partner to establish relationship goals in the future, you can keep yourself and them interested in the relationship, and before you know it you’ll be together at last.
